What is a Nurse Practioner?
A nurse practitioner is a registered nurse who has completed a master’s or doctoral degree program and has advanced clinical training beyond their initial professional registered nurse (RN) preparation. A nurse practitioner has education and training in a specialty area such as pediatrics or family medicine.
Nurse practitioners work with doctors and other health care professionals to provide a full range of primary care, acute care, and specialty health care services. In the state of Michigan, nurse practitioners work both in collaboration with and under supervision of doctors. Nurse practitioners write prescriptions for medications, manage health conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes, treat infections and injuries, order diagnostic tests like blood tests and x-rays, and manage patients’ overall care.
What makes nurse practitioners unique is their emphasis on the health and wellbeing of the whole person. Nurse practitioners focus on health promotion and prevention of disease through health education and counseling.
